Chile closes Allende case after confirming suicide (AP)

SANTIAGO, Chile ? A judge in Chile has closed the case on the death of President Salvador Allende after an authoritative autopsy confirmed it was suicide.

An international panel of experts convened by Judge Mario Carroza determined that Allende took his own life with an AK-47 while defending the presidential palace in Chile's 1973 coup.

Carroza ruled out the possibility that a soldier or bodyguard fired the fatal shots. He also disproved a range of other myths surrounding Allende's death 38 years ago.

Allende was among 726 people who died or disappeared when Gen. Augusto Pinochet seized power, and whose cases were stuck in the courts since then. Carroza is studying these cases anew under orders from the Supreme Court.

NBA Roundup: Rockets, Martin down Spurs

Kevin Martin scored 25 points, Luis Scola added 18 and Kyle Lowry had 16 points, nine rebounds and eight assists to lead the Houston Rockets to a 105-85 win against the visiting San Antonio Spurs.

The Rockets took advantage of the Spurs' poor shooting at the start and built a big lead.

First-year Houston coach Kevin McHale was able to rest his starters in the fourth quarter, with his team playing the first of three games on consecutive nights.

DeJuan Blair scored 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for San Antonio, which shot 38 percent (35 of 93) and went 2 for 17 from 3-point range.

Tim Duncan went 1for 8 from the field and scored four points and Richard Jefferson went 2 for 10 and had only five points for the Spurs.

Scola scored eight of Houston's first 10 points, prompting Spurs coach Gregg Popovich to call an early timeout.

Martin sank his first 3-pointer of the season after going 0 for 6 from long range in the opening loss to Orlando and the Rockets led, 13-4.

The Spurs missed nine of their first 10 shots, but rallied to cut their deficit to 23-18 by the end of the first quarter.

Martin stayed hot in the second quarter, hitting another 3 to help the Rockets rebuild the lead.

San Antonio, meanwhile, hit another drought, missing 15 of its first 17 shots in the second quarter.

Houston led, 53-35, at the break. Martin sank three 3-pointers and scored 20 points in the half, only two points shy of the total for the Spurs starting lineup.

Martin swished a 3-pointer in the first 45 seconds of the third quarter to stretch the lead past 20 points.

Parker and Ginobili started driving inside and San Antonio started to rally, climbing to within 12 on Blair's putback near the midpoint of the quarter.

Martin hit another long jumper and Lowry sank a 3 as the Rockets regained control and built the lead to 78-59 by the start of the fourth.

A lineup of all reserves maintained the comfortable lead for Houston early in the final quarter, as the Spurs continued to sputter on offense.

The outcome decided, Popovich had all his starters except Richard Jefferson on the bench with 4:20 left.

Samuel Dalembert, acquired by Houston on Monday, blocked four shots and scored four points in 21 minutes of action. The 6-foot-11 Dalembert had 10 points and five rebounds in Houston's opener.

Other game

? Magic 94, Nets 78: Ryan Anderson scored 22 points, and Dwight Howard had 16 points and 24 rebounds as Orlando cruised by visiting New Jersey. Jason Richardson added 16 points for the Magic -- including 15 in the first half -- and J.J. Redick scored 15 points off the bench. It was the 49th career 20-rebound game for Howard, who neared his career high of 26 rebounds.

US military report shares blame on NATO bombing of Pakistani soldiers (VIDEO)

Relations between US and Pakistan have soured so much that the report on the NATO bombing is likely to have little effect. Instead, Pakistanis fret about rumors of a possible military coup.

A US military investigation into the Nov. 26 NATO bombardment of two Pakistani checkpoints has cast blame on both the Americans and the Pakistanis. The report, released yesterday, said that the Americans failed to share crucial information about their future military movements because its commanders didn?t trust their Pakistani counterparts, but also said that Pakistani troops fired on a joint US-Afghan patrol, even after the joint patrol identified itself.

NATO bombs killed 24 Pakistani soldiers, an event that worsened already bad relations between the two supposed allies. The report doesn?t appear to have improved matters. Pakistani military officials rejected the report, with Army spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas calling it ?short on facts.?

?Pakistan?s army does not agree with the findings of the US/Nato inquiry as being reported in the media,? Gen. Abbas told reporters in Islamabad. ?The inquiry report is short on facts.?

The Nov. 26 incident occurred when a joint US-Afghan commando raid on a supposed militant camp on the Afghan-Pakistan border apparently stumbled onto a Pakistani paramilitary force instead. US investigators say the Afghans and Americans came under fire, and called in for air support when the Pakistani patrol continued to fire.

The Afghan-Pakistani border is notoriously porous and poorly marked, so in a sense, it is surprising that more of these events don?t occur. It is likely that the US and Afghan patrol would have operated with GPS equipment, with villages, border lines, and specific coordinates for their target clearly marked at all times. But the winding trails that border residents take to reach pastureland or marketplaces don?t respect boundaries, and it?s plausible that either the joint Afghan-US patrol and the Pakistani soldiers may have gone astray.

The Nov. 26 NATO bombing attack couldn?t have come at a worse time in US-Pakistani relations. Many Pakistanis were already angered by a series of US military drone attacks within Pakistani airspace, the arrest of a CIA contractor Raymond Davis in a double-murder case, and finally, the US military raid, on Pakistani soil, that killed Al Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden in the town of Abbottabad on May 1.

Rachel Uchitel Confirms, Tweets Proof of Pregnancy

Matt Hahn got Rachel Uchitel pregnant. We've known since October, when she tried out for The Amazing Race and her random drug test confirmed it.

Now she's confirmed the news, however. The 36-year-old nightclub manager Tweeted: "Expecting big things for 2012. Five down, four months to go."

Here's a nice photo she posted as well. Melts your heart.

Pregnant Rachel Uchitel

Uchitel, whose claim to fame is having affairs with married golfer Tiger Woods and married Bones star David Boreanaz, married Matt Hahn in October.

"We are both really happy and feel extremely fortunate to have one another," she said at the time in a statement announcing her second marriage.

Prior to marrying Hahn, Uchitel was engaged to investment banker James Andrew O'Grady, who was killed in the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks.

Uchitel then went on to marry Wall Street trader and childhood friend Steven Ehrenkranz in 2004, though their union lasted just four months.

She also hooked up with Jamie Dingman, a wealthy businessman now believed to be dating Elin Nordegren. Yeah, Uchitel is a sketchy chick.

Congrats on the baby though!

Big Deal of the Year: Microsoft?s acquisition of Skype for $8.5B

Microsoft purchased Skype in a deal worth $8.5 billion in cash. The acquisition gave Microsoft the highly visible internet voice and video service that accounts for about one in five international calling minutes worldwide.

The Skype takeover was voted the big deal of the year by readers of TechFlash as part of our 2011 TechFlash Newsmaker Awards, or Flashies.

Many have knocked the deal, given Microsoft?s poor track record with large acquisitions (Danger, aQuantive) and the high price the company is paying for Skype. However, given that Skype was rumored to be in talks with Facebook and Google prior to being scooped up by Microsoft, it?s been suggested that coup alone is worth the price tag.

Microsoft has said it will use Skype?s technology to support Microsoft devices including Xbox and Windows Phone and Microsoft will connect Skype users with Lync, Outlook and Xbox Live.

Skype is now a business division of Microsoft and Skype CEO Tony Bates reports directly to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.

Russia slams US for its human rights record (AP)

MOSCOW ? Russia's Foreign Ministry has attacked America's human rights record in its first report on injustice elsewhere in the world, offering examples such as the Guantanamo Bay prison and wrongful death row convictions to paint the U.S. as hypocritical for lecturing other nations on the subject of rights.

"The situation in the United States is a far cry from the ideals that Washington proclaims," says the report released Wednesday.

Moscow has previously reacted angrily to the accusations of human rights breaches that the U.S. State Department has leveled at Russia in its annual reports. The State Department has expressed concern about the violent attacks on rights activists and journalists in Russia, most of which go unpunished. It also has criticized abuses in Russia's Caucasus, including extrajudicial killings, kidnappings and torture.

The 90-page Russian report slams EU nations, Canada and Georgia, but reserves its longest section of 20 pages for what it says are violations by the United States. The report does not cover Asia, Africa or the Middle East, other than a five-page section criticizing the NATO operation in Libya.

Moscow laments the ongoing operation of the "notorious" prison in Guantanamo Bay, where terrorism suspects have been held since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, and criticizes President Barack Obama for "legalizing indefinite and extrajudicial custody and the return of court martials."

The report accuses the U.S. of prying into citizens' personal lives and violating the rights of Muslim Americans in the fight against terrorism. It also points to errors made by American courts.

"Judicial errors are the Achilles heel of American justice as concerns capital punishment," the report argues. It notes the roughly 130 people sentenced to death in the past 30 years who were later cleared of the charges, some after they were executed.

The Foreign Ministry also struck back at international criticism of Russia's recent parliamentary election, which independent observers said involved widespread fraud. Outrage over the vote set off a spate of protests led by citizens unhappy with Vladimir Putin's rule.

The report accuses the U.S. of blocking independent candidates from elections and criticizes the practice of allowing governors to nominate senators when a Senate seat is vacated, as when Obama became president. It refers to the conviction this year of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who was accused of trying to auction off Obama's Senate seat.

The State Department is reviewing the Russian report, spokesman Mark Toner said. He said such reports can be a "useful mechanism provided that they are produced using objective methodology."

"We certainly don't regard it as interference in our internal affairs when foreign governments, individuals or organizations comment on or criticize U.S. human rights practices," he said, adding later, "In terms of our human rights record, we're an open book."

Pope calls for end to Syria violence

Pope Benedict called for an end to violence in Syria and a resumption of Middle East peace talks on Sunday on a Christmas Day marred by a bomb blast at a Catholic Church in Nigeria.

The leader of the world's 1.3 billion Roman Catholics delivered his twice-yearly "Urbi et Orbi" (to the city and the world) message and blessing to tens of thousands of people in St Peter's Square on a crisp but clear day as millions of others watched on television around the world.

At the end of his address, the 84-year-old pope, celebrating the seventh Christmas season of his pontificate, delivered Christmas greetings in 65 languages, including Turkish, Hebrew, Arabic, Swahili, Hindi, Urdu and Chinese.

"May the Lord come to the aid of our world torn by so many conflicts which even today stain the earth with blood," he said, speaking in Italian from the central balcony of St Peter's Basilica.

"May the Prince of Peace grant peace and stability to that Land where he chose to come into the world, and encourage the resumption of dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians. May he bring an end to the violence in Syria, where so much blood has already been shed," he said in a firm, steady voice.

His Christmas plea for peace around the world was brutally ignored in Nigeria, where an explosion Sunday claimed by Muslim extremists ripped through a Catholic church during Mass.

Authorities say at least 25 people were killed by the explosion at the St. Theresa Catholic Church in Madalla, near the Nigerian capital, Abuja. A radical Muslim sect waging a sectarian fight claimed the attack and another bombing near a church in the restive city of Jos.

Story: Dozens die as Christmas Day bombings sweep Nigeria

The assaults come a year after a series of Christmas Eve bombings in Jos claimed by the militants left at least 32 dead and 74 wounded.

Benedict didn't refer explicitly to the bombings in his Christmas Day survey of the world's trouble spots, delivered from the sun-drenched loggia of St. Peter's Basilica. But the Vatican issued a statement denouncing them as a sign of "cruelty and absurd, blind hatred" that shows no respect for human life.

Elsewhere, Christians braved lashing rains and wind to celebrate Christmas Mass in Jesus' traditional birthplace on Bethlehem's Manger Square. St. Catherine's Church is attached to the smaller Church of the Nativity, which is built over a grotto where the faithful believe Jesus was born.

"We wanted to be part of the action," said Don Moore, 41, a psychology professor from Berkeley, Calif., who came to Bethlehem with his family. "This is the place, this is where it all started. It doesn't get any more special than that."

The holy town of Bethlehem is no stranger to violence. Like the rest of the West Bank, it fell on hard times after the Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation broke out in late 2000. Although civil affairs in the biblical town on Jerusalem's southeastern outskirts are run by Palestinian authorities, security control remains in the hands of Israel, which built a barrier around three sides of the town to keep Palestinian attackers out.

Palestinians say the barrier has badly hurt the local economy, which depends heavily on tourism, by severely restricting movement in and out of the town.

But as the violence has subsided, tourists have returned in large numbers. On Saturday, turnout for Christmas Eve festivities in Bethlehem was at its highest since the uprising began driving tourists away. An estimated 100,000 visitors streamed into Manger Square on Christmas Eve, up from 70,000 the previous year, according to the Israeli military's count.

Speaking just a few hours after celebrating a late-night Christmas Eve Mass, Benedict said he prayed that the birth of Jesus, which Christmas celebrates, would send a message to all who need to be saved from hardships.

He cited refugees from the Horn of Africa and flood victims in Thailand, among others, and called for greater political dialogue in Myanmar, and stability in Iraq, Afghanistan and Africa's Great Lakes region, which includes Congo, Uganda and Rwanda.

In the piazza below, thousands of jubilant tourists and pilgrims, and hundreds of colorful Swiss Guards and Italian military bands mingled around the Vatican's giant Christmas tree and larger-than-life sized nativity scene.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

House fire kills 5 on Christmas

Fire tore through a house in a tony neighborhood along the Connecticut shoreline early Sunday, killing five people, making it among the worst Christmases in the city's history, the mayor said.

Officials said the fire, which was reported shortly before 5 a.m., killed two adults and three children. Two others escaped. Their names have not been released.

"It is a terrible, terrible day for the city of Stamford," Stamford Mayor Michael Pavia told reporters at a news briefing at the scene of the fire. "There probably has not been a worse Christmas day in the city of Stamford."

Acting Fire Chief Antonio Conte said attempts by firefighters to rescue the house's occupants were pushed back by intense flames and heat.

He said fire officials do not yet know the cause of the blaze and will not likely get clues for a few days until fire marshals can enter the house "and figure out what happened."

Conte said he did not know the conditions of the two survivors.

"We had our hands full from the moment we arrived on the scene," he said.

A neighbor, Sam Cingari Jr., said he was awakened by the sound of screaming and that the house was entirely engulfed by flames.

"We heard this screaming at 5 in the morning," he said. "The whole house was ablaze and I mean ablaze."

Cingari says he does not know his neighbors, who he said bought the house last year and were renovating it. Power also was out in the neighborhood, he said.

Charles Mangano, who lives near the scene, told The Advocate of Stamford he saw a barefoot man wearing boxers and a woman being led out of the house.

The woman said, "'My whole life is in there,'" he said. "They were both obviously in a state of shock."

The 3,349-square foot, five-bedroom home sold for $1.7 million in December 2010, according to the Stamford assessment office's website. It's located in Shippan Point, a neighborhood that juts into Long Island Sound.

Tony Low-Beer, another neighbor, said he was awakened by a neighbor after 4 a.m. who told him about a "raging fire" next door.

"Cinders were flying all over the place," he told The Associated Press.

He said he secured his three dogs and put his iguana in a carrying case because he was concerned he might have to evacuate. As of Sunday afternoon, he was still at his home.

Stamford, a city of 117,000 residents, is about 25 miles northeast of New York City.

a new opinion in Campus & Careers about Liverpool John Moores University in general

Liverpool John Moores University in general

Newest Review:?... yourself and can cope by yourself, but the ones who do care are happy to help. University provide an extensive support team at all the cam... more

Lucy

Author Name: Lucy

I am currently in my 2nd year studying Sports Development, Physical Education and Inclusion. The student halls accomodation across the city I can not fault, it is lovely, well cared for and the staff who work within them are very helpful and welcoming, although it is very expensive (?92-160 per week). The campus itself is rather dated on the outside but inside is full of technology, it is in the lovely countryside although the local residents arent very welcoming of students. The course itself is very up and down, some modules are excellent and you cannot fault them, however for every good one there is one which is very pointless and no relevant (as far as myself and others can see/understand). The lecturers are up and down as well, some are really really good and very helpful, provide support for studies and home life, although on the other hand there are others that have the attitude you are grown up enough to look after yourself and can cope by yourself, but the ones who do care are happy to help. University provide an extensive support team at all the campus' which is a great support for anyone as they deal with a variety of issues and point you in the right direction if they cannot help themselves. LJMU offer a wide variety of societies and clubs, some are very cheap and accessable but others are rather expensive (a lot more than if you joined a local club). LJMU do offer some good job opportunites but only after you have finished your degree (WOW certificates and Graduate skills, as well as gradute job days). Also a lot of sports kit is very expensive and so are the books especially as they know you are students (the uni's answer is to use your student loan that is what it is there for! Most dont understand student loan doesn't cover your accomodation!) I would reccomend this uni if you are a very independent student and cope with little study support and enjoy nightlife.

Summary: It is okay as long as you are made of money!

Girl, 9, was feared missing after flight change (AP)

HARTFORD, Conn. ? A 9-year-old girl flying by herself to visit her grandmother had to change planes unexpectedly, sending her relatives into a panic when her original Southwest Airlines flight landed without her.

Chloe Boyce took off from Tennessee on Tuesday, bound for LaGuardia Airport in New York. Bad weather forced her plane to detour, and the passengers had to change planes. When the plane she was initially on arrived at LaGuardia, family members said it took close to an hour to locate her.

"When I got the text (from her mother) that she wasn't on the plane, and Southwest doesn't know where she is, I started freaking out," said Joseph Kerr, the girl's stepfather.

Southwest spokesman Brad Hawkins said the airline apologized to the family for not letting them know she had changed planes.

Chloe, of Clarksville, Tenn., was accompanied by Southwest employees during her trip, but she said she was a little nervous because nobody told her why she had to get off the plane in Baltimore.

"I was like `I'm supposed to be getting off at LaGuardia. I'm not supposed to get off this plane,'" she said.

Chloe's journey started in Nashville. She was rerouted to Cleveland, then went to Columbus, Ohio, before landing in Baltimore. From there, she made it to New York, 3 1/2 hours later than scheduled. After meeting with her relatives, they drove to her grandmother's house in Danbury, Conn.

Her stepfather is an Army sergeant based at Fort Campbell, Ky., so she is used to traveling, her family said.

"She was definitely more calm than we were," said Elena Kerr, her mother, who reached Chloe by cell phone at the Baltimore airport when she did not show up on time in New York.

Southwest gave the family a $250 flight voucher and refunded the girl's ticket, but Chloe's family has not received an explanation for why the airline did not tell them about the changes. He said they plan to ask the Federal Aviation Administration to require airlines to notify guardians of any changes to flights carrying unaccompanied minors.

Hawkins, the Southwest spokesman, said the airline tries to notify parents of "irregular operations," even though it is not mandatory. He also said the airline tries to avoid such situations by booking unaccompanied minors on itineraries that don't require changing planes.

For the return trip, Joseph Kerr said they will be driving back.

"That way we know where she is, who she is with, and she is safe," he said.

Amid NKorea mourning, vows to support new leader (AP)

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? Mourning centers have been set up in towns and villages across North Korea in a stepped-up show of public grief Friday over the death of leader Kim Jong Il, but attention and allegiances were already clearly shifting to his young son.

Scenes of dramatic mass mourning have been a daily occurrence in Pyongyang since Kim's death was announced on Monday. Thousands of North Koreans ? including heir Kim Jong Un and other top officials ? have poured into a funeral palace in the capital to view his body or bow before his portrait.

By Friday, mourning stations had also been established in provincial, city and county seats, and at institutions and enterprises across the country.

"The sorrow at the loss of our leader is tremendous. But we would not stay in grief only," Sok Kil Nam, a 24-year-old worker at the Chollima Steel Complex in the city of Nampho, told The Associated Press. He added: "As long as we have great comrade Kim Jong Un, the cause of the respected General Kim Jong Il will go on, so we continue working, not leaving our work sites."

North Korea's official media have been quick to feature the younger Kim in coverage of the mourning ? a strong indication that the country's leadership is behind installing the 20-something son as Kim Jong Il's successor and the public face of the nation.

Officials in Seoul and Washington, after initial jitters over possible instability, are calling the transition so far a smooth one. There have been no outward signs of unrest on the streets or unusual troop movements along the borders.

"We continue to monitor and assess the situation and continue normal operations for stability and security in the region," said Cmdr. Ron Steiner, a spokesman for the U.S. 7th Fleet, which is based in Japan.

The North, however, remains highly sensitive to what it sees as outside threats.

One North Korean media outlet known for being particularly strident in its commentary slammed South Korea for putting its military on a heightened alert level after Kim's death, calling it an "insult" that derides the dignity of a nation in mourning.

The government-run website, Uriminzokkiri, also said the fate of the relations between the two Koreas depends on how the South deals with requests from its civilians to visit the North to pay respects to Kim.

"We are watching the attitude of the South Korean government," it said.

It said Pyongyang will accept anyone from South Korea hoping to pay respects to Kim Jong Il and that routes by both air and land will be opened. North Korea has said through its other media that foreign delegations would not be allowed in to attend the official funeral for Kim on Dec. 28-29.

Keenly aware of the sensitivities, South Korean President Lee Myung-bak has sought to assure Pyongyang that his country was "not hostile," despite putting its front-line troops on alert since Kim's death was announced. On Friday, the presidential Blue House announced it had lifted an emergency mode for all government workers except those involved in security and foreign affairs.

Even so, South Korean Unification Ministry spokesman Choi Boh-seon said his government remains "firm" in its position not to allow civilians to visit North Korea to pay respects to Kim Jong Il, except the bereaved families of former President Kim Dae-jung and former Hyundai Asan chairman Chung Mong-hun.

Kim met with Kim Jong Il in 2000 in Pyongyang in the first summit meeting between the two Koreas. Chung led a joint tourism project with North Korea that yielded much-sought hard currency for Pyongyang until its suspension in 2008.

In a parliamentary hearing, South Korean Unification Minister Yu Woo-ik said Seoul is open to dialogue with the North, if that would be constructive.

"I hope the emergence of the new leader will lead North Korea to move in the right direction and enhance the livelihoods of the North Korean people," Yu said.

Asked if Seoul considers Kim Jong Un as successor to Kim Jong Il, Yu only said his government is "closely monitoring the issue."

Communication between the United States and North Korea also still appears open as the North continues its official 11-day mourning period. But the State Department said it wasn't expecting any meeting with the North Koreans this week, and little contact before the mourning period ends Dec. 29.

In a strong endorsement of the young Kim, the North's main newspaper Rodong Sinmun has urged the country to "rally, rally and rally behind great comrade Kim Jong Un and faithfully uphold his leadership."

It called him "the outstanding leader of our party, military and people and a great successor."

South Korea's intelligence agency has told Parliament members that an ad hoc committee in which Kim Jong Un is a vice chairman is expected to handle key state affairs before he formally becomes the country's leader.

The agency predicts Kim Jong Un's aunt Kim Kyong Hui, a key Workers' Party official, and Jang Song Thaek, her husband and a vice chairman of the powerful National Defense Commission, will play larger roles supporting the heir, according to a lawmaker who spoke to the AP.

US appears to soften ban on online betting (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration appears to have softened a U.S. ban on Internet gambling.

In a legal opinion posted Friday, the Justice Department said online betting unrelated to sporting events falls outside the reach of federal law.

The U.S. government has long considered such gambling illegal when it crosses state lines.

The gambling industry is worth billions worldwide but many operators are based overseas. Washington has cracked down on some of them, and a 2006 law forbade financial institutions from processing funds for most online wagering.

Because of the difficulty in enforcing age and other requirements, the issue has divided lawmakers and the industry. But several states have been studying plans for web betting within states.

The opinion letter was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Drinks and joy as defectors embrace Kim's death (AP)

SEOUL, South Korea ? More than 21,000 North Koreans now live in South Korea. For many, the news of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il's death stirred mixed emotions.

Several interviewed in Seoul by The Associated Press described a burst of joy upon hearing that Kim had died, but also a surge of unease over the fate of relatives and friends and even a shadow of homesickness.

There was celebration ? one man had drinks with a friend_ and hope for a better future for their homeland. For one woman, there was sadness as she envisioned little girls cramming to memorize the Kims' feats.

South Korea is no paradise for the defectors either; facing prejudice and lacking job skills, they rarely feel welcomed by their capitalist brethren.

Here, in their own words, are what three of them had to say:

___

THE PAINTER

"I felt rather calm after hearing of Kim Jong Il's death," said Song Byeok, 42, a painter who learned his art drawing propaganda posters in North Korea. "I thought to myself about him: 'You, too, are human in the end.'

"It was his destiny. He couldn't avoid it. ... He was praised like a god, but in the end, he was only a human who fell like an autumn leaf."

Desperate for food in 2000, Song and his father tried to cross the river into China ? not to defect but just to get something to eat from relatives on the Chinese side.

He still believed Kim Jong Il was a good leader.

However, when his father was swept away by the current and drowned, border guards ignored Song's pleas to help rescue him; instead they beat Song up and detained him. The experience convinced him to leave for good in 2002.

"I thought to myself after hearing Kim died that a wind of democratization may finally blow in North Korea," he said. "Reforms may come because Kim Jong Il has died.

"Kim Jong Un is young and he may lean toward reforms. But I still think he may not last long because he's too inexperienced. He only had a year or so to be groomed as successor.

"It may have been better for him if Kim Jong Il had lasted longer."

Song Byeok is the name he paints under and is widely known by in South Korea; he refused to divulge his real name for fear of retaliation against relatives and friends still in North Korea.

___

THE STUDENT

"I believed North Korea was the best country in the world," said Lee Hyeon-seo, who was 13 when late President Kim Il Sung, father of Kim Jong Il, died in 1994.

"I really believed in the theory of self-reliance," she said.

"When Kim Il Sung died, I saw many foreign guests crying on TV, which made me feel like Kim Il Sung was a god," she said. "But as days passed, I felt I wasn't as sad as I was supposed to when I stood in front of his statue.

"Everybody was crying but I couldn't cry, so I dabbed my face with my spit. It was a hot day, and some girl fainted and was sent to a hospital."

Lee, now 30, fled the North in the mid-1990s and lived for a decade in China before moving to South Korea in 2008. Now she studies Chinese at the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul.

"I remember the propaganda education vividly even though I was a girl," she said. "In North Korea, excelling at math or English is less important than being good at the history of Kim Il Sung's revolutionary steps. Now I know it's fake, but we had to cram as much of the history in our heads as possible. We struggled to get high marks on the subject in school.

"I used to believe unification was a pipe dream. But now it may be possible. I'm hearing from friends that they'd like to be invited to my house in North Korea if the Koreas are reunified."

___

THE ACTIVIST

"I know a person's death is usually something that shouldn't be celebrated, but this time it was completely different," said Kim Seung-cheol, 50.

"Kim's death meant that North Korea would start changing," he said. "It was a hopeful sign for a change."

Kim went out with a friend to celebrate over sausages and "soju," a popular Korean liquor. They laughed with joy.

When he defected 20 years ago, he left behind his wife and son.

"If unification happens, I would like to find out if my son is still alive," he said. "If I find him, I will ask him to hit me for leaving him.

"And if I'm reunited with my wife, I will sing a song out of joy. But I have to ask forgiveness of her, because I've married another woman here in South Korea.

"I've pretty much given up on trying to find my son. It's important he be alive though," he said. "I only hope he is not living a miserable life as a vagabond.

"I hope South Korea can start engaging North Korea. A conciliatory gesture may be needed to open up North Korea. Seoul should send a message to Pyongyang that South Korea wants to go together with the new leadership in North Korea."

Ford Social: Fashion and Automotive Design Meet to Talk About ...

A lot of people associate a ?green? automobile with a hybrid or an electric car. While there?s nothing wrong with that, Ford puts a lot of effort into green or sustainable initiatives that aren?t so obvious in many of its vehicles.

To share some of these innovative ideas and to learn more from influencers, Ford worked with EcoStiletto to create the ?EcoStiletto to the Metal: Sustainable Design Media Salon,? at the historic Farmer?s Daughter Hotel in Los Angeles.

We talked to Natasha Garber, editor of EcoStiletto, to hear what she thought of the program:

Ford Social: Why did you and EcoStiletto decide to work with Ford on this program?

Natasha Garber: When EcoStiletto began in 2007, the idea was to create an online space where women could learn more about sustainability in terms of style. When Ford came to us with the idea of creating an event where we could discuss the integration of sustainability into their design, especially as it relates to using ?cradle to cradle? materials, we were thrilled.

FS: Your website covers all types of fashion ? how does automotive design fit in with the great variety of things you talk about?

NG: Yes, we?re talking about cars, not a subject typically associated with fashion. At EcoStiletto, our focus is on style and sustainability. We learned that Ford shares the same focus.

FS: Do you see a lot of crossover between great fashion and automotive design?

NG: After this event, yes!

FS: What can the automotive industry learn from the fashion industry? And vice versa?

NG: Most importantly, I think both can learn that there is a place for sustainability in both industries. If Ford can create a car from 100 percent sustainable materials, then why can?t a high-fashion design house ? or a popular, mid-range retailer or designer for that matter ? do an entire line in the same way?

FS: What did you hope to get from this program? How does that compare with what happened?

NG: The event actually exceeded my hopes. I knew that our Ford panelists would be full of valuable information, but I was amazed at how passionate and uncompromising they were about their work. Anthony Prozzi?s presentation on cultural influences, and the new demand for better, more efficient, greener cars was really inspiring. And I appreciated that Carol Kordich and Susan Swek excited everyone with their discussion of color, materials and the influence of fashion on Ford interior design, but they were also forthcoming about the real challenges of approaching difficult areas like carpeting and exterior paint from a sustainable perspective. And I loved how engaged our media audience was, I?m pretty sure they could have continued asking questions for hours.

FS: Any big surprises during the event?

NG: I think the biggest surprise was learning about Ford sustainable initiatives across the board, not just in the area of what we think of as ?eco? cars ? namely hybrid and electric vehicles ? but across its entire fleet. It was great to learn just how much of an environmental impact even a 25 percent sustainable materials mandate can have in terms of resource conservation and waste reduction. I also loved hearing about the Ford C-max Energi plug-in hybrid, which I think is going to be one car that our readers will definitely covet.

Reducing Petroleum Use by Using Wheat

Small changes can make a huge difference. Consider a plastic storage bin. By using wheat straw-reinforced plastic rather than 100-percent traditional petroleum products, it is estimated that petroleum use will be reduced by approximately 20,000 and CO2 emissions will be reduced by approximately 30,000 pounds per year. In Somalia, fears over US wire transfer block

(AP) ? Somali officials said Friday they are pleading with U.S. authorities to persuade banks to reconsider a decision to block money transfers from Minnesota's Somali community to relatives in this Horn of Africa nation, where anarchy has given safe haven to an al-Qaida linked terror group.

A bank that handles the majority of money transfers from Minnesota to Somalia ? Sunrise Community Banks ? has said it will discontinue the service at the end of December over fears it could be at risk of violating government rules intended to clamp down on the financing of terror groups. Minnesota political leaders Rep. Keith Ellison and Sen. Al Franken, both Democrats, are seeking solutions.

Omar Jamal, first secretary of the Somali Mission to the United Nations, said in an email on Friday that he is working with U.S. politicians on the issue and is "close" to finding a resolution.

"To cut off the lifeline to millions of Somali refugees will lead to a colossal humanitarian crisis in Somalia," Jamal wrote.

An untold number of Somalis depend on small remittances ? perhaps $50 to $200 a month ? sent from family members in the U.S. Even that small amount of money goes a long way in Somalia, and can make the difference between a dignified life and homeless poverty.

"Adopting that decision will be catastrophe to the lives of millions of who depends on remittances," Abdiweli Mohamed Ali, Somalia's prime minister, said earlier this week.

Halima Osman, a mother of five in Somalia's impoverished capital, is among many worried about an even bleaker economic future. The 50-year-old Osman typically receives $150 a month from her son in Minneapolis, who is the family's only breadwinner.

"Without remittances we shall lead a new life of poverty and famine because there is no other alternative to get money from abroad," said Osman, who lives in a dilapidated five-room villa in Mogadishu.

Jamal said he is urging money transfer companies ? known as hawalas ? to make sure "money doesn't fall into the wrong hands."

The decision to end Somali remittances came weeks after two Minnesota women were convicted in October of conspiracy to provide support to al-Shabab, the most dangerous insurgent group in East Africa.

Evidence showed the women, who claimed they were sending money to charity, used the hawalas to send more than $8,600 to the terror group, which has ties to al-Qaida. In another case, a Somali refugee in San Diego admitted this month that she sent money to the group.

Joe Witt, president and chief executive officer of the Minnesota Bankers Association, said banks are required to monitor their customers and report on certain types of activity. If they make a mistake or report something wrong, they face huge penalties.

"It's an incredible framework of rules and regulations, and if you do it wrong, it's absolutely a nightmare for the banks," Witt said.

Meanwhile, he said, money service businesses that wire funds internationally ? especially to places that might be unstable ? have been tagged as businesses that involve heightened security and compliance measures. While that doesn't mean every hawala is risky, he said a lot of banks have "made a determination that it's not a type of business they are comfortable in conducting."

Adan Hassan, spokesman for the Somali American Moneywiring Association and a manager at Kaah Express, a Minnesota-based hawala with locations in six other states, said the hawalas are subject to federal and state regulations, and he understands the regulations are necessary for national security and the well-being of the community. The hawalas must comply in order to keep their licenses.

Federal regulations require that hawalas ask for identification from anyone submitting over $3,000, Hassan said, though some companies require IDs for lower amounts as well. The hawalas collect the name, location, and phone number of the beneficiary, and the sender gives the hawala cash or a check or money order. The money is processed and the sender receives a receipt.

The recipient must present an ID to pick up the money on the other end, Hassan said.

Transfers to Somalia are not the only ones affected. Hassan said Kaah Express sends most of its transmissions to Kenya, which has the largest number of Somali refugees. Kaah Express also works with a well-established Ethiopian bank. He said those accounts are all affected, regardless of the destination of the money.

Humanitarian aid in a region beset by war and famine could be harmed by the banking decision, said a statement from Oxfam American and the American Refugee Committee. The group said Somalia's famine this year would have been far worse without remittances from the Somali community abroad.

"It is estimated that $100 million in remittances goes to Somalia from the U.S. every year. This is the worst time for this service to stop. Any gaps with remittance flows in the middle of the famine could be disastrous," Shannon Scribner, Oxfam America's Humanitarian Policy Manager, said. "The U.S. government should give assurances to the bank that there will be no legal ramifications of providing this service to Somalis in need."

If the new banking rules are put in place, Somalis in Minnesota say they will find other ways to send money. One way is to send the remittances to another country, such as Kenya or Britain, and then have a third party pick up the money and re-wire it to Somalia.

Ali, the Somali prime minister, said his government is working to make sure the link between American banks and the Somalia hawala system continues.

"We have sent a memo to the U.S. authorities to call off that decision because that will cause Somalis to economical crisis," he said. "The monies sent from abroad are backbone for the lives of thousands."

Mother killed children, boyfriend before suicide: police (Reuters)

CHICAGO (Reuters) ? A rural Illinois mother killed her three children and live-in boyfriend before killing herself last week, police said.

Sara McMeen, 30, was the "sole shooter" of 29-year-old Daniel Warren, 10-month-old Maggie Warren, 8-year-old Skyler Lemke and 7-year-old Ian Lemke, the Livingston County Sheriff's Police in a statement issued on Monday.

An autopsy report found that McMeen died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the neck. A handgun, a semi-automatic 40-caliber pistol, was found next to her hand. An autopsy showed carbon residue on her hands, according to Livingston County Coroner Michael P. Burke.

The bodies were found on Friday afternoon at a home in Emington, a rural town of about 120 people located about 80 miles southwest of Chicago.

Authorities had previously declined to identify the shooter.

David Reiss, a San Diego-based psychiatrist, said it is hard to generalize why someone would kill their family and then commit suicide.

"You don't know what fantasies are going through a person's mind -- whether it's pure rage or pure despair," Reiss said.

Authorities said they are looking for anyone who spoke to McMeen or Daniel Warren in the days before the shootings.
