Flesh-eating disease proved near-deadly 'Catch'

Discovery

Michael "Bear" Rogers suffered tough times after leaving the crab boat Wizard behind.

By Ree Hines

Life on the crab boat Wizard is often hard. Tuesday night's episode of "Deadliest Catch" proved that yet again when crew member Chris Scambler had to be airlifted off the boat due to dehydration and shock. But as it turns out, life after the crab boat Wizard can be even harder.

Former deck boss Michael "Bear" Rogers, who worked the Wizard long before Capt. Keith Colburn bought the boat, contracted necrotizing fasciitis -- flesh-eating bacteria -- after leaving the high seas behind.

During an interview with KING 5 News, Rogers and his family revealed the high toll the disease took.

Years ago, leg pain was Roger's first sign of a problem. Just three days after he went to a hospital, his kidneys began to fail -- and that wasn't the worst of it.

Medical staff warned that there was a chance he could lose one or even both of his legs at the hip due to the potentially deadly affliction.

"I told the nurse that I wanted to save my leg and that I would do anything that they needed me to do, just don't cut it off," Rogers recalled. But he'd been in and out of consciousness and soon learned his pleas were too late. "They had already cut it off!"

Rogers lost one leg below the knee, but likely gained years of life thanks to the surgery. His daughter explained that if he'd waited any longer to get help, "the odds are very high that he wouldn't be alive."

Despite losing the limb, the 59-year-old stressed, "I'm glad I'm alive."

See how the current crew of the Wizard fairs on "Deadliest Catch" Tuesdays at 9 p.m ET on Discovery Channel.

ECOWAS considers women's role in regional agricultural investment ...

Ghana is hosting a four-day ECOWAS Regional Workshop to examine the role of women in the search for food security in West Africa.

It is being attended by representatives of ECOWAS Member States from Ghana, Benin, Togo, Burkina Faso, Niger, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Cote I?dvoire and Mali with the aim of achieving a better understanding of the contribution of women to the strategic food chain as identified in the ECOWAS Regional Agricultural Investment Programme.

The participants are also expected to help ensure better integration of gender concerns into the Regional Agricultural Investment Plan (RAIP).

RAIP indicates that achieving food sovereignty in the Region requires priority work on products which enjoy a high production potential, correspond to the changing habit of the populations and demonstrate a high level of extra-regional imports which could be replaced by enhancing the complementarities of the production basins and promoting regional trade.

Dr Sintiki Ugbe, Director of Gender in the ECOWAS Commission, addressing opening session of the forum in Accra on Tuesday, said the outcome of the workshop would determine what intervention ECOWAS would put in place to address the challenges regarding gender disparities in the agricultural sector and ensure food security.

She explained that RAIP aims at implementing the programmes identified in the ECOWAS Agricultural Policy (ECOWAP) which was adopted by regional leaders in January 2005.

Dr Ugbe said the policy was intended to help achieve the dream of ?modernising agriculture in favour of food sovereignty? with a view to speeding up economic growth in order to reduce poverty, contribute to better distribution of wealth and ensure preservation of natural resources and the environment.

The ECOWAP, she said, was built around three specific objectives of promoting strategic products conducive to food sovereignty, promoting global environment conducive to regional agricultural development as well as the reduction of vulnerability and the promotion of the population?s sustainable access to food.

Dr Ugbe said the workshop would examine the nature and pattern of participation of men and women in the cultivation of rice, maize and cassava, which were identified in the regional agricultural investment programme.

?Similarly, they will examine the nature and pattern of the participation of both sexes in the livestock-meat and fish products and their food value chain,? she added.

She said participants were expected to identify other possible investment entry points in agriculture for women farmers in the region, examine the ease and availability of credit, agricultural inputs, extension and small scale equipment to men and women farmers in West Africa, as well as examine ways in which the various challenges facing women could be addressed.

Dr Bola Adetoum, Principal Programme Officer, (Gender), ECOWAS Commission, Abuja, noted that the significance of placing gender at its proper place in agricultural investment and at the national levels could not be overemphasised.

She urged participants to brainstorm on strategies to make women more visible in the agricultural sector and addressing issues such as gender inequalities, financial support and mainstreaming gender into agriculture.

4 Retirement Investment Options to Try

Even if retirement is four decades away, you need to plan for it. The first step is to know various retirement investment options. These days, pensions given by companies disappear fast thus the need to invest in retirement.

One of the retirement investment options are target date retirement funds. These are funds that immediately balance your portfolio when your retirement date approaches. This then takes away the time wasted in planning for retirement. In having this kind of fund, you just pick out the fund with the year nearest to your retirement date. The handlers of your fund will alter the asset allocation when the date nears. Your money would be transferred from stocks to investments that have fixed income. The only problem with this kind of option is when a bear market hits during the time your fund has shifted to bonds from stocks. Should this happen, you will lose plenty of money because the fund would be selling down at the market?s lowest level.

Another retirement investment option is a balanced fund.

This is a mixture of bonds and stocks. A balanced fund has the tendency to be less unpredictable with bonds rather than a fund that has been invested only in stocks. If you wish to utilize a balanced fund with a 401k and IRA, check that both the bonds and stocks are appropriate.? Remember that when you are near your retirement period, you should lower your investment in stocks. If you are ready to retire, have a balance of both bonds and stocks. ?

Aggressive stock funds are also retirement investment options. This is ideal for young employees because they may provide a bigger return in the future although it can also be risky. This fund will be managed by a person or company who will choose stocks that are deemed of less value. When their value increases in time, the price of the fund then goes up. As time passes by, the retirement portfolio may also heighten. There are plenty of 401k plans that have aggressive stock funds, target date funds and balanced funds. It is your call to decide the combination of investments you deem proper based on your age and years of employment till you reach retirement.

Other retirement investment options include products and programs that are supported by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation such as IRAs, savings, checking, trusts and Certificates of Deposit. These are sold by banks via their agents. There are also money market deposit accounts provided by banks that are insured by the FDIC. The limit of FDIC insurance is $250,000 for each account. Visit your bank if they have such products you can invest in for your retirement.

Be reminded that not all banks are insured by the FDIC. You can go directly to the FDIC to check if your funds are invested in a company that is insured with them. There are also products offered by banks that are not FDIC-insured. FDIC insurance does not back stocks, bonds, mutual funds, annuities and life insurance products.

Retirement investment options should be well-thought of before you take a leap and invest. You can hire a retirement investment advisor to help you with the most viable option. With an honest and reputable advisor, you will be assured that your savings is in good hands.

With wise and carefully-planned retirement investment options, you will have a secure future upon retirement.

Empire State Building Innovations Generate Big Energy Savings

NEW YORK ? The Empire State Building's owners once envisioned floating airships docking with the skyscraper's spire, but windy updrafts forced the dirigibles to abandon that dream. Today, the world-famous building may stand for a more practical vision of the future that can save energy without dimming the lights.

Recent renovations have allowed the iconic skyscraper to save on 20 percent of the energy used by its 20,000 workers and 3.5 million annual visitors ? total building usage being enough energy in an hour to keep an average light bulb burning for over 100 years. The energy retrofit included elevators that harvest energy with regenerative braking, lights capable of turning on and off by themselves and the largest wireless network of sensors installed in any building in the world.

"Saving energy without compromise in performance is what's going to save the world, and that's the work we set about doing at the Empire State Building," said Anthony Malkin, chief of the Empire State Realty Trust.

In this case, saving the world started with the Empire State Building saving $2.4 million in energy costs in its first full year following the energy retrofit. Eventually, the building is expected to save on $4.4 million in energy costs after tenant spaces have been renovated ? enough to pay for the energy retrofit in three years. The building owners marked the first anniversary of the energy efficiency makeover on May 7.

"You're not going to change the world with a water feature or bike rack or a shower or a wall of green plants in your lobby," Malkin told InnovationNewsDaily. "The No. 1 consumer of power in a city like New York City is buildings ? in New York City, it's about 80 percent."

Remaking a classic

New energy-efficient buildings rise all the time, but more than 90 percent of all buildings that will exist in 2035 already stand today. For cities to make a difference in saving energy, more existing buildings will need to follow the example of the Empire State Building ? currently the tallest U.S. building to have received a Gold LEED certification for sustainability from the U.S. Green Building Council.

The iconic skyscraper beloved by tourists and Hollywood filmmakers appears mostly unchanged from the time it first soared above the New York City skyline during the Great Depression, but internally, it received its first top-to-bottom renovation (including the energy efficiency efforts) as part of a $550 million effort. The last big change in the building's history was when air conditioners were installed in the 1950s, Malkin said. [Video: Empire State Building Energy Make-Over]

Much of the energy efficiency planning that began in 2006 focused on insulating the 102-story building. Starting in 2009, work crews installed insulation between radiators sitting below each of the windows and the building's outer walls to keep heat from escaping during the colder months.

A mini-factory inside the Empire State Building also allowed work crews to upgrade the building's 6,514 windows at night ? all the better for not disturbing office workers during the day. The work crews removed each window to the workshop for cleaning, installed a heat-reflective film between the double panes of glass, and injected krypton and argon gases as added insulation. That left the refurbished windows almost as much energy efficient as triple-paned windows, but for a fraction of the cost.

Some like it hot

The building owners also looked for better control over the building's use of energy for lighting, heating and cooling. They contracted with Johnson Controls for a smarter system capable of tracking energy usage throughout the building. The same system allows the building's residents to change temperature settings within individual offices, as opposed to the on-or-off heating and cooling systems for many modern office buildings.

First, Johnson Controls put in variable controls for the Empire State Building's air conditioner chillers and air ventilation system ? the equivalent of allowing for different speed settings to adjust to changing temperature conditions. Then the company hooked everything up with sensors networked together in a huge, intelligent monitoring system.

"Today, the Empire State Building is perhaps the building with the most installed wireless thermal temperature settings and sensors throughout the building compared to any other building that's in place," said Dave Myers, president of the building efficiency business at Johnson Controls. "And part of that is to allow the dynamics to take place around the different operating conditions required to save energy."

That efficiency extends from automated hallway lights to the Empire State Building's outside lighting display. New energy-efficient LED lighting will allow the building to show off new and improved computer-controlled displays for both New Yorkers and tourists during the evenings.

Buildings are people

But the Empire State Building owners also wanted to recruit the building's 20,000 workers and resident companies to save energy. Their new system encourages companies to install energy-efficient measures, allows residents to see their energy usage, and even spurs on competition between building tenants by allowing them to see how well their neighbors are doing.

That sharing of energy efficiency data goes beyond encouraging neighborly competition within the skyscraper. The Empire State Building owners worked with Johnson Controls, the Clinton Climate Initiative, Jones Lang LaSalle and the Rocky Mountain Institute to make the entire energy-efficiency retrofit process an open format to inspire other buildings. "The whole idea is that by sharing all this data and sharing all this info with the whole world, people will be able to see what we've done, they'll see the results we've achieved, they'll see the benefits to the tenants, they'll see we saved money and they'll see we've also made more money," Malkin said.

Visitors may end up more impressed with the restoration of the art deco lobby to its former grandeur as seen in 1931. But Malkin remains enthusiastic about the building's energy-efficiency changes ? even if he remains somewhat amazed by the speed of the skyscraper's original builders.

"It took two years to do [the renovations], but it only took 13 months to build the building, so I still haven't figured that out," Malkin said.

Wall Street rebounds, but investors dump Facebook

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks rose more than 1 percent on Monday, with the S&P 500 snapping a six-day losing streak in a rebound from equities' biggest weekly drop in almost six months, but Facebook slumped in its second session after a disappointing debut.

Tech shares <.gspt> were among the day's biggest gainers, with an S&P sector index surging 2.8 percent on the strength of Apple Inc . Shares of Apple climbed 5.8 percent to $561.28, leading the Nasdaq to its biggest one-day percentage gain since December 2011.

Facebook Inc , the social networking giant that fell short of lofty expectations last week, fared no better on Monday. Facebook's stock sank 11 percent in its second day of trading, dropping to $34.03, well below its $38 issue price.

"Institutional buyers weren't as enamored with Facebook as retail investors were, so it isn't a surprise to see them taking their liquidity out for other areas," said John Norris, managing director of wealth management with Oakworth Capital Bank in Birmingham, Alabama.

Investors are watching the 1,300 to 1,290 range on the S&P 500 as a major support level, the lower end of which was tested last week after the benchmark index had fallen 7.8 percent since the end of April. The bottom of the range coincides with the S&P 500's 10-month moving average.

Sentiment improved after G8 leaders gave verbal backing for Greece to stay in the euro and stressed over the weekend that their "imperative is to promote growth and jobs." Greece is expected to hold elections after the country was unable to form a government following its most recent elections.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> jumped 135.10 points, or 1.09 percent, to 12,504.48 at the close. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> climbed 20.77 points, or 1.60 percent, to 1,315.99. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> rose 68.42 points, or 2.46 percent, to close at 2,847.21.

In another factor helping sentiment, China's premier called for additional efforts to support growth on Sunday, signaling Beijing's willingness to take action after a recent series of economic indicators suggested that the world's second-biggest economy will slow further in the second quarter.

"We've been in something of a near panic lately, and after so many down days, it was inevitable that we would bounce back, especially with news indicating that things aren't falling apart," Norris said.

Facebook shares were expected to face tough trading this week if lead underwriter Morgan Stanley stops supporting the stock and managers listed lower down in the IPO book, who were hoping for an early surge, decide to get out before going underwater.

Nasdaq OMX Group said it plans to implement procedures through which the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) will accommodate orders not executed in Facebook during the social media company's market debut on Friday. Nasdaq shares gained 3.6 percent to $22.78 after falling more than 4 percent on Friday.

In earnings news, Lowe's Cos Inc , the world's second-largest home improvement chain, cut its fiscal-year earnings outlook and said demand slowed toward the end of the traditionally strong first quarter. Lowe's stock slumped 10.1 percent to $25.60.

Yahoo shares rose 1 percent to $15.58 after news that Chinese Internet entrepreneur Jack Ma is buying back up to half of a 40 percent stake in his Alibaba Group from Yahoo for $7.1 billion in a deal that moves the Chinese e-commerce leader closer to a public listing.

About 83 percent of companies traded on the New York Stock Exchange closed in positive territory while on the Nasdaq, almost three-fourths of shares ended higher.

Volume was light, with about 6.77 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange and Nasdaq, below last year's daily average of 7.84 billion.

Balance-sheet weakness could be in store in coming quarters if prices remain under pressure. ...</p><br clear="all"/>Home Depot sales miss Wall Street estimates<p><a href="http://news.yahoo.com/home-depot-sales-miss-expectations-102029462.html"><img src="http://l3.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/_iLhoH3X0Lh55Ev3X2MukA--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7Zmk9ZmlsbDtoPTg2O3E9ODU7dz0xMzA-/http://media.zenfs.com/en-AE_XE/News/Reuters/2012-05-15T183651Z_3_CBRE84E0SZ700_RTROPTP_2_NEWS-US-HOMEDEPOT.JPG" width="130" height="86" alt="A customer wheels a cart through a Home Depot store in Washington" align="left" title="A customer wheels a cart through a Home Depot store in Washington" border="0" /></a>(Reuters) - Home Depot Inc posted quarterly sales that fell short of Wall Street's heightened expectations on Tuesday after demand slowed in April following a jump in home improvement projects spurred by an unusually warm winter.</p><br clear="all"/>http://news.yahoo.com/home-depot-sales-miss-expectations-102029462.html2012-05-15T18:36:51ZReutershome-depot-sales-miss-expectations-102029462<p><a href="http://news.yahoo.com/home-depot-sales-miss-expectations-102029462.html"><img src="http://l3.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/_iLhoH3X0Lh55Ev3X2MukA--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7Zmk9ZmlsbDtoPTg2O3E9ODU7dz0xMzA-/http://media.zenfs.com/en-AE_XE/News/Reuters/2012-05-15T183651Z_3_CBRE84E0SZ700_RTROPTP_2_NEWS-US-HOMEDEPOT.JPG" width="130" height="86" alt="A customer wheels a cart through a Home Depot store in Washington" align="left" title="A customer wheels a cart through a Home Depot store in Washington" border="0" /></a>(Reuters) - Home Depot Inc posted quarterly sales that fell short of Wall Street's heightened expectations on Tuesday after demand slowed in April following a jump in home improvement projects spurred by an unusually warm winter.</p><br clear="all"/>Home Depot sales miss Wall Street estimates<p><a href="http://news.yahoo.com/home-depot-sales-miss-expectations-102029268--finance.html"><img src="http://l.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/90HgFK9QlabM2m3S0FuEFw--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7Zmk9ZmlsbDtoPTg2O3E9ODU7dz0xMzA-/http://media.zenfs.com/en_us/News/Reuters/2012-05-15T183651Z_3_CBRE84E0SZ700_RTROPTP_2_HOMEDEPOT.JPG" width="130" height="86" alt="A customer wheels a cart through a Home Depot store in Washington" align="left" title="A customer wheels a cart through a Home Depot store in Washington" border="0" /></a>(Reuters) - Home Depot Inc posted quarterly sales that fell short of Wall Street's heightened expectations on Tuesday after demand slowed in April following a jump in home improvement projects spurred by an unusually warm winter. Teens with High Fiber Diet Have Lower Risk of Heart Disease and Diabetes*

A high-fiber diet?of vegetables, fruits and whole grains reduces the chances of teenagers developing?heart diseases and diabetes later in life, according to a study done by?Michigan?State University in East Lansing.

Joe Carlson, leader of the research and head of the Division of Sports and Cardiovascular Nutrition at the university, said that even if teenagers have generally fast metabolism, it does not give any license for teens to eat fatty foods.

?It is a fact that if one consumes a lot of saturated fat or trans fat, it raises the total cholesterol level in the body, most especially bad cholesterol,? said Carlson.

Carlson recommends a high fiber diet for teenagers.

The study looked into the diets of 2,000 teenagers in the United States from 12 to 19 years old. The researchers examined the teenagers for the existence of metabolic syndrome by looking at indications of high blood pressure, increased sugar and fat levels in the blood, low levels of good cholesterol and a larger than normal waistline.

Metabolic syndrome is the term for the combination of factors that lead to having higher risk for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and other health problems.

?Metabolic syndrome has always been linked with exercise but not with nutrition. This is what we want to take a look at in this study,? said Carlson.

About 6 percent of the teenagers?were diagnosed with metabolic syndrome.?Nine percent of them who had high risk for heart disease and diabetes as they were tasked to eat less fiber in their diet. This is a remarkable comparison to only 3 percent of the participants who had risk for heart disease and diabetes when tasked to have a high fiber diet.

Carlson reiterated that while metabolic syndrome may not be a disease, it increases the risk for those who have been diagnosed with it.

The American Heart Association recommends 20 to 25 grams of fiber each day to have the most benefits from it including lower cholesterol levels and lower risk for cardiovascular diseases. High fiber diet includes grains such as whole wheat pasta, bran flakes, oatmeal, fruits and vegetables, legumes and nuts, such as lentils, black beans and lima beans.

* Dietary Fiber is one of the most vital elements in the body which regulates the proper growth of food. If you want body to perform in harmony all the elements in the body should perform properly.
