Fish Oil Tied to Prostate Risk but Some Experts Are Skeptical

The fish oil supplements that millions of American men take each day to cut their risk of heart disease might have a dark side, at least according to a study released today that is sure to generate controversy.

Can fish oil really prevent heart disease?

The new study, published today in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, suggests that men who have higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their system face a 43 percent increased risk of developing prostate cancer and a 71 percent increased risk of the high-grade form of the disease.

To determine this, the researchers relied on data from a past study that examined the blood concentrations of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in 834 men with prostate cancer and 1,393 men without prostate cancer. When they did this, these researchers found an association between high omega-3 levels and the occurrence of prostate cancer.

Whether the increased level of omega-3 in the men with prostate cancer was from supplements or from oily fish in their diet was unclear. But lead study author Dr. Theodore Brasky of Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center said that no matter the source, the findings suggest that men should be wary of getting too much of the nutrient.

?Men will probably want to talk to their doctors, especially those patients who have been recommended increased fish oil intake,? Brasky said. ?They should probably moderate their intake of fatty fish and they should avoid fish oil supplements at this time, especially considering that when men are taking fish oil supplementation they are taking [higher doses than they need].?

But some experts say more evidence is needed before men make drastic changes. ABC News Chief Health and Medical Editor Dr. Richard Besser said that the original study from which this data was drawn was not specifically designed to look at the exact relationship between omega-3 fatty acid intake and prostate cancer, so men should think twice before discontinuing them entirely.

?This is not proof that omega 3?s cause prostate cancer,? he said.

If anything, Besser added, the finding should reinforce the notion that better dietary health does not necessarily come in a pill form.

?If you want omega 3?s, get them from food,? he said. ?The more we look at supplements, the more untoward consequences we find.?

Doctor?s Take

So where does this leave men who, based on this study, are worried that they will have to choose between a healthy heart and a healthy prostate?

The first thing that these men should do is speak to their doctors prior to making any changes to their diets and discontinuing current supplementation. In particular, men with active heart conditions or elevated cholesterol levels should approach their cardiologists and discuss the risk versus the benefits of consuming fatty fish and fish oil supplementation.

Deborah Nardone: Correct Your Course on Natural Gas, Mr. President

Recently President Obama has taken several important steps down the trail towards addressing climate disruption. But when it comes to natural gas, the president is taking the wrong path.

The president was exactly right when he said no single step can reverse the impacts of climate change. The scale of the challenge, and the duty to our children and grandchildren, will require multiple steps, all at the same time, to urgently address the problem.

We must take these steps immediately, for our own health and for the sake of future generations. Coordinating our steps to reduce greenhouse gas pollution will require great political will and must include reductions in the use of all fossil fuels.

The president's comments about the dirty Keystone XL pipeline show that he is serious about using climate impact as his yardstick for making high-profile energy decisions. We know that natural gas is a dirty, dangerous fuel that is bad for the climate. Every day the evidence of this becomes clearer. We look forward to a day when the administration sees fracked gas for what it is: a dirty, dangerous fossil fuel of the past and a threat to public health. The same yardstick for KXL must also be used with fracked gas.

A Presidential Climate Action Plan that doubles down on clean energy cannot also continue our reliance on natural gas. Deepening investments in natural gas will hamper, not assist, transforming our energy system and tackling the daunting climate task ahead.

Instead of looking below our feet for more oil, coal, and natural gas, it is time to set our sights above ground for wind, solar, and energy efficiency. This is the only way to keep climate-changing gases out of our atmosphere. Protecting our health and environment must be a higher priority than the profit-seeking interests of the natural gas industry.

Obama's climate legacy is taking shape and is building momentum. Science and research clearly show that natural gas is a threat to our climate, our water and air, and our health. Yet the drilling boom has brought drilling and fracking into the backyards of too many communities that are not equipped to handle this dangerous industrial gas development and its consequences.

We urge President Obama to rethink the role of natural gas. It's a fuel of the past, a threat to our communities and our health. It's clearly not a climate solution.

Natural Gas Is Not a Climate Solution

The president's plan to promote fuel-switching from coal to gas for electricity production is a no-win situation for our communities being fracked or for our climate. Greenhouse gas levels are at record highs. Merely slowing the rate at which we emit greenhouse gases will not meaningfully stabilize our climate.

Best available science shows that even with complete control and capture of methane during production and transmission, continued reliance on natural gas puts us on a trajectory towards climate disaster. The IEA's "Golden Age" report shows that coal-to-gas switching through to 2035 puts us on an untenable climate path with a mean increase of 3.5 degree Celsius by 2060. It's clear that natural gas is not a climate solution; it is a trail that leads us on a path to climate destruction. It's not a transition fuel or a bridge -- it's a gangplank to a much warmer planet.

Export Clean Energy Innovation, Not More Fossil Fuels

The export of liquefied natural gas (LNG) would pose even greater risk to our climate. Even if just a few of the 24 proposed LNG export terminals were authorized, we would see a significant expansion of fracking, causing substantial increases in greenhouse gas emissions. Fortunately, the administration can still prevent this harm by rejecting those LNG export proposals. If it makes this decision using climate impact as a yardstick, that is exactly what it will do.

Significant amounts of methane leak during production and transmission of natural gas. Methane is a much more potent greenhouse gas -- 72 times more potent than CO2 over a 20-year period, significantly adding to our climate crisis. In addition, the massive amount of energy required to liquefy and transport natural gas makes LNG the most carbon-intensive form of natural gas on a life-cycle basis. LNG exports thus risk worsening climate change. For all these reasons, exporting even a fraction of the gas proposed for export could seriously harm American communities and the environment.

Economically as well, exporting LNG comes with significant risks. Natural gas prices are expected to rise as demand increases, hitting record levels right as LNG export terminals come online, pushing the price up even further. Those price hikes harm tens of millions of Americans. We call on the Obama administration to thoroughly study the economic and environmental aspects of these exports.

Developing a global market for U.S. gas is premature. We must have an open and informed national conversation to determine whether exports are truly in the public interest. We must fully understand the economic, environmental, and health impacts that increased fracking will have on our communities and our economy. Deciding whether and how to move forward with LNG exports is among the most pressing environmental and energy policy decisions facing the nation. Let's not do this blindly.

Unfortunately, a set of free trade pacts the Obama administration is actively promoting -- the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement and the US-EU free trade pact -- could require the United States to automatically approve all exports of U.S. fracked gas to countries in the European Union and the Asia Pacific. It is critical that our trade policy support strong climate action -- not multinational corporations who want to ship natural gas overseas, threatening our climate in the process.

The President's commitment to tackling climate change is essential, yet there's so much more to do. We must join together and demand that the oil and gas industry be held accountable for their pollution. We must close the federal exemptions the industry enjoys. We must prevent the exporting of LNG, whose climate footprint will significantly add to climate disruption. We must not allow free trade agreements drive rampant gas production in communities already affected by water and air contamination.

We must usher in truly clean, renewable energy. We must demand reduction of global consumptions of dirty dangerous fossil fuels including natural gas. Lace up your boots Mr. President, we must start now.

Mexico's Televisa second quarter net profit rises 31 percent

MEXICO CITY | Tue Jul 9, 2013 5:23am BST

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican media company Grupo Televisa, the world's biggest producer of Spanish-language content, said on Monday lower financing costs helped boost its second-quarter net profit nearly 31 percent from the same year-ago period.

Televisa reported a net profit of 1.826 billion pesos (94.3 million pounds) compared to 1.396 billion pesos in the year-earlier quarter. Revenue rose 6.4 percent to nearly 18.1 billion pesos.

Televisa's investment costs soared in the second-quarter of 2012 due to its acquisition of 50 percent of cellphone company Iusacell from Grupo Salinas, which controls Mexico's No. 2 broadcaster TV Azteca.

Financing costs in the second quarter fell by 963 million pesos compared to the same period last year to under 1.2 billion pesos.

Televisa shares are down nearly 9 percent so far this year after lawmakers passed a law that seeks to increase competition in the television market. Analysts warn the stock could face further pressure as a more powerful regulator comes into office.

Female inmates in California pressured into sterilizations

The California Department of Corrections has been coercing pregnant female inmates to undergo sterilization for more than a decade.

Doctors under contract with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation sterilized nearly 150 female inmates from 2006 to 2010 without required state approvals, the Center for Investigative Reporting has found.

At least 148 women received tubal ligations in violation of prison rules during those five years ? and there are perhaps 100 more dating back to the late 1990s, according to state documents and interviews.

?

One former Valley State inmate who gave birth to a son in October 2006 said the institution?s OB-GYN, Dr. James Heinrich, repeatedly pressured her to agree to a tubal ligation.

?As soon as he found out that I had five kids, he suggested that I look into getting it done. The closer I got to my due date, the more he talked about it,? said Christina Cordero, 34, who spent two years in prison for auto theft. ?He made me feel like a bad mother if I didn?t do it.?

Cordero, released in 2008 and now living in Upland, agreed to the procedure. ?Today,? she said, ?I wish I would have never had it done.?

Heinrich insists that he didn?t pressure any of the women and said that the $147,000 paid to local doctors for the procedure ?isn?t a huge amount of money compared to what you save in welfare paying for these unwanted children ? as they procreated more.?

Since 1994, sterilizations using state funds have required approval on a case-by-case basis from medical officials in Sacramento ? but no such requests have come before the approval committee since the receiver began overseeing medical care in 2006. While Valley State medical manager Daun Martin denies approving the surgeries at her prison, contract records show that at least 60 tubal ligations were done there while she was in charge.

Martin, they Valley State Prison medical manager, said she and her staff had discovered the procedure was restricted five years earlier. Someone had complained about the sterilization of an inmate, Martin recalled. That prompted Martin to research the prison?s medical rules.

Martin told CIR that she and Heinrich began to look for ways around the restrictions. Both believed the rules were unfair to women, she said.

?I?m sure that on a couple of occasions, (Heinrich) brought an issue to me saying, ?Mary Smith is having a medical emergency? kind of thing, ?and we ought to have a tubal ligation. She?s got six kids. Can we do it??? Martin said. ?And I said, ?Well, if you document it as a medical emergency, perhaps.??

Heinrich said he offered tubal ligations only to pregnant inmates with a history of at least three C-sections. Additional pregnancies would be dangerous for these women, Heinrich said, because scar tissue inside the uterus could tear.

Former inmates tell a different story.

Michelle Anderson, who gave birth in December 2006 while at Valley State, said she?d had one prior C-section. Anderson, 44, repeatedly was asked to agree to be sterilized, she said, and was not told what risk factors led to the requests. She refused.

Nikki Montano also had had one C-section before she landed at Valley State in 2008, pregnant and battling drug addiction.

Montano, 42, was serving time after pleading guilty to burglary, forgery and receiving stolen property. The mother of seven children, she said neither Heinrich nor the medical staff told her why she needed a tubal ligation.

?I figured that?s just what happens in prison ? that that?s the best kind of doctor you?re going to get,? Montano said. ?He never told me nothing about nothing.?
